Shindo Demo Format
Shindo Demonstration – Possible Format
It is suggested that there be about 10 students, with both hard and soft shindos, though not all will need them at all times
A good idea, perhaps to have some youth as well as adults, both beginners and experienced practitioners
Introduction – 1 minute
- have students line up, and bow, like at the beginning of class (shinsen, dojo, shindo)
- could have someone commentate during the bow in, or after, explain what was
happening to the spectators
- have students line up
History – 2 minutes
- should give a brief introduction to shindo
- the history (available on website)
- the difference between practice shindo and soft/safe shindo
- the use of shindo as self-defense, non-aggressive
- some mention should be given to the parallel between traditional karate, and shindo practice, which will lead nicely into some basic techniques
Basics – 7 – 11 minutes
- suggested to have every other student with a shindo, the rest without, to show that the techniques are very similar with or without the shindo
(could work in partners with this one as well)
(defensive grip)
- blocks: inside, cross blocks (1 – 2 minutes)
- strikes: high, low, solar plexus punches (1 minute)
(offensive grip)
- blocks: outside block (1 minute)
- strikes: nukite/thrust (1 minute)
(bokon grip)
- strikes to either side of a held shindo (work with partners) (1 minute)
- running commentary will describe some of the basic aspects of shindo
- target areas of blocks and strikes
- hip action
- lines of force
- grips/holds
- fulcrum
- Shindo Nidan (1 minute)
- everyone together
- demonstration of a couple bunkai interpretations (additional 2 - 4 minutes depending on number of techniques chosen, about 30 seconds per technique)
Intermediate – 3 - 5 minutes
Suggested to work in partners, to demonstrate effectiveness and application explicitly
- combinations
- can be taken from the DVD directly or created by any shindo instructor
- perhaps demonstrate in single counts, and then have a demonstration of
combinations with fluency (1 - 2 minutes per combination)
- running commentary will discuss fine points of techniques
Advanced – 5 - 10 minutes
- advanced combinations
- can be taken from DVD directly or created by any shindo instructor
- should include side-stepping, disarming with precise strikes, continual body
motion (1-2 minutes per combination)
- running commentary will again discuss fine points of techniques
- kushanku no shindo (2 minutes)
- performed by a couple of advanced students
- bunkai demonstration of a couple selected techniques (additional 3-4 minutes)
Outro – 1 minute
- students should line up again, and bow much as they did to begin the demonstration
- minimal discussion is needed, except to state that it’s similar to the beginning bows
For approximately 15-17 minutes of demonstration, the black items are needed
For approximately 30 minutes of demonstration, utilize the techniques in red
