World Traditional Karate Association (WTKA) The Shintani Wado Kai Karate Federation (SWKKF) is affiliated with the World Traditional Karate Association. The WTKA offers our members the ability to earn International Dan Ranking / Registration, International Instructor / Examiner certifications and the ability to compete in WTKA Championships around the world. Dan Rankings In order to obtain a Dan rank with the WTKA, students must participate and pass a Dan Grading in front of the WTKA National Technical Committee during a WTKA Seminar or Clinic. Students will be evaluated on the technical standards that are submitted and approved as part of the application process. D class: Those who have 2nd Dan with D class Instructor are qualified to instruct and train at local dojo. B class: Those who have 4th and 5th Dan with B class Instructor are qualified to instruct and train at Provincial level. A class: Those who have 6th Dan and above with A class Instructor are qualified to instruct and train at National and International level. Instructor Certification Program The certification program has 4 levels of certification, as follows: INSTRUCTOR LEVEL 1 Targeted at Brown Belts and Shodan Black Belts. INSTRUCTOR LEVEL 2 Targeted at Nidan and up. INSTRUCTOR LEVEL 3 Targeted at Nidan and up. INSTRUCTOR LEVEL 4 Targeted at Yodan and up. Typically, an individual who teaches regional workouts and programs offered by the organization. This level would mentor Level 1, 2 and 3 students. The core components of the certification include: Shintani instructor course. This course consists of theory, practical work and assessment. Additional Shintani Courses and Workshops. Security Check. Standard CPR / First Aid certification. National Coaching Certification Program Courses (NCCP) or equivalent national program. NCCP is a program sanctioned in Canada for all sports. Refer to https://www.coach.ca to create an NCCP Locker Account and provide access to Making Headway and Making Ethical Decisions courses. There are other equivalent national programs that are acceptable and will be handled on a case-by-case basis. The different levels in the program will have different requirements that include programs from our organization as well as CPR / First Aid and official courses from Sport Canada or an equivalent national course if you choose to go that route. The requirements for each of the levels are as follows: To provide flexibility and focus on the interests of our membership, the SWKKF has many different courses / training being offered by our senior instructors. The following courses can be used for credit towards one of the instructor certification levels: Instructor Course (** Mandatory for all certification levels) Judging and Tournament Courses Bunkai Courses (Level 1, 2, 3) Shindo Courses (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) Shintani Kata Clinics Sparring Strategies Course Self Defense Courses (Level 1, 2, 3) Click for information on Instructor Levels Instructor Level 1 Instructor Level 2 Instructor Level 3 Instructor Level 4 You will need to submit an application form to the Grading Committee chairperson (dhumphries@shintani.ca ). This will be reviewed to ensure that you are compliant with all the requirements in accordance with the certification level being requested. Once this is satisfied, the Committee will notify the applicant. The applicant will send an eTransfer ($50 + GST/HST) to payments@shintani.ca . Arrangements will then be made for the applicant to be presented with a certificate indicating successful completion of the appropriate level of the Instructor Certification Program. Applying for the Fund About the Fund Eligibility Application Sensei Jeff Gervin Memorial Training Fund Applying for the Memorial Fund Students are invited to apply for support through the Sensei Jeff Gervin Memorial Fund. Grants of up to $200 are available on a first-come, first-served basis while funds remain. How it Works Application form: form.jotform.com/251126458723053 About the Fund Purpose The Sensei Jeff Gervin Memorial Training Fund honours the life and passion of Sensei Jeff Gervin, a dedicated karateka and martial artist who inspired many through his commitment and love of martial arts. He believed that exploring different perspectives deepens understanding. Each year, the fund supports karate students expanding their martial arts knowledge. Students may apply for reimbursement of seminars, courses, or training events in any martial arts discipline. The fund opens January 1 and remains open until the annual allocation (minimum $1000) is used. For 2025, the fund will be available from May 1 to December 31. Eligibility Rules Open to all SWKKF karateka in good standing. Up to $200 per person per year; additional funds may be available if the annual budget remains at year-end. Eligible expenses: seminar or course fees for any martial art, inside or outside of the SWKKF. Not eligible: travel costs (hotel, food, gas) and expenses to host events (gym rental, honorarium). Wado Kai Wado is a Japanese karate style founded in 1939 by Master Hironori Otsuka. It combines Master Otsuka's early experience with classical jujutsu (also known as jujitsu) with the shotokan karate he learned as a student of Gichin Funakoshi's. Wado, meaning the "way of peace/harmony", is one of the four major styles of karate in Japan. It, perhaps, is the purest form of karate-do (the way of the empty hands). Trained in classical bujutsu (the techniques of the samurai), Master Otsuka applied this outlook and experience to his teachings. Some of the harsher resistive or hard contact elements of sparring technique, typical of many karate styles, are not present in Wado. Master Otsuka rejected hardening certain parts of the body, such as hand conditioning, as useless preparation. Hanshi Masaru Shintani was one of Master Otsuka's senior students. At the time of his death, he was the head of Wado Kai karate for North America. The aim of Wado karate is not merely perfection of the physical techniques of self-defense, but the development of a mind that is tranquil yet alive, able to react intuitively to any situation. In Wado, as skill and knowledge are acquired through training and concentrated effort, the student is expected to develop inner strength and calmness of character, as well as the virtues of self-control, respect for others, and true humility. Karate-do for Master Otsuka was primarily a spiritual discipline. Basic techniques - punching, kicking, blocking, striking with open hand, joint twisting, and trapping techniques - kata (a sequence of techniques done in certain order against imaginary opponents), and prearranged and free style sparring comprise the training foundation of this style. Equally fundamental to Wado is taisabaki, body shifting to avoid the full brunt of an attack, a technique derived from Japanese swordsmanship. Kumite (sparring) is usually judged on a point system. One referee and four corner judges determine which techniques are given a point. In free sparring, there is no contact allowed to the head, below the waist except for foot sweeps, or to the spine. Only light to medium contact is allowed to the torso. Attacks to the head and torso can all score points in a tournament. Therefore, Wado karate-ka tend to fight with explosive, close movements with an emphasis on well-controlled techniques.

In addition to training at your own dojos, students are encouraged to share and acquire knowledge from other Shintani Wado Kai Karate Members. When progressing through yudansha ranks, there should be a continuous evolution of your physical, technical, tactical and mental proficiency. You should demonstrate a never-ending desire to improve yourself. A Shodan will demonstrate competence in the basics of Shintani Wado Kai Karate. A Shodan will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all sections of the grading curriculum techniques and abilities. A Nidan will demonstrate additional speed, focus, and power. There will be increased confidence in the overall techniques and abilities. A Sandan will demonstrate efficiency and effectiveness. Being able to convey this to others is part of that development and critical to the advancement of the art. A Yodan will demonstrate knowledge and confidence in your basic and advanced techniques. A Yodan is proficient but continues to strive for advanced personal accomplishment. A Godan level and above will demonstrate superior knowledge and understand of all aspects of karate. A well-rounded black belt has established a combination of physical expertise, humility, loyalty and leadership.
